Meet Phil - Psychologist & Founder of Deagon Sunroom

Abstract Paint Strokes

Before working as a psychologist, I grew up in the country, served in the Australian military, worked security in a five-star hotel, and spent time on construction sites and in landscaping while studying. Now I'm a husband and a father of two.

The range of people and situations that came with those years has probably shaped my work more than anything else.

I was once told I'm too normal to be a psychologist. I've come to take that as a compliment, it means people tend to talk to me the way they'd talk to someone they trust, rather than someone they're presenting to.

I've spent over eight years in private practice, including two years working as a provisional psychologist inside an adult male prison; an environment that quickly teaches you to engage honestly with all kinds of people, in all kinds of circumstances.

I don't work from a rigid diagnostic framework or a single model of treatment. What I've found more useful is a genuine understanding of what makes people tick - how emotions work, how the stories we carry shape us, and what it actually takes to shift things when life gets hard. The work tends to be direct and practical, without losing sight of what matters most to you.

I also have a particular interest in working with veterans and those currently serving. I understand that culture in a way that can be difficult to explain but easy to feel when it's present.

I work with adults and young adults dealing with all kinds of difficulties - from acute stress and relationship strain to longer-standing impacts of trauma and grief.

People who've come through challenging careers, those navigating family roles, those carrying things quietly for a long time.

There's no particular type of person I work best with.

Over the years I've sat with a genuinely wide range of personalities, life experiences, and ways of seeing the world - and I've found that the most important thing is usually just that the conversation feels real.
